Alessandra Pio is a PhD candidate in Brazilian Education at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She currently is a PhD Visiting Scholar at New York University through the Abdias Nascimento Program. She is a teacher in the municipal public network of Caxias and has been a pedagogue in the federal public network of Rio for 15 years. Alessandra Pio founded the Group of Studies, Research and Actions on Racism and Ethnic and Indigenous Relations (GEPARREI), and the Extension Course on Ethnic-Racial Relations in Basic Education (EREREBÁ) - the last of which were transformed into postgrado lato sensu. She is also a teacher in the program in Teaching History of Africa at Colégio Pedro II, and is a member of the Laboratory of Studies and Research in Higher Education (LEPES) and the Group of Studies and Research of Educational Systems (GESED), also at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Her research interests include: educational evaluation, education and identity of the black population, antiracist education and affirmative action policies.
